Dermot worked in top tier Australian law firms (Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurts), Freehills (now Herbert Smith Freehills) and Tresscox & Maddox (now WHL Ebsworth)) whilst completing his law degree and was admitted in 1999.
Dermot has also worked in top tier British law firms whilst working for alost 8 years in the UK working in London for Nabarro (now CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP), Masons (now Pinsent Masons) & Bevan Brittan (Bristol) focusing largely on large infrastructure PPP/PFIs, renewable energ projects and the waste sector. Dermot returned to Sydney in late 2008 and worked in private practice developing a practice in the renewable energy and carbon sectors as well as providing a wider offering to private and corporate clients.
Moving in-house to one of his clients from 2012-2016, as in-house lawyer in the renewables/carbon sector, as well as heading the company’s carbon business, Dermot got to experience the client side of the law.
During this time Dermot completed a Masters of Environmental Law from Sydney University in 2012 (with a strong focus on debt/equity and project financing, secondary markets (trading), regulation and structuring of renewable/carbon projects) and is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Energy from the University of Queensland. A number of short courses compliment Dermot’s Masters, which he has completed in: Construction Law (Melbourne University: Construction Contracts and Construction Claims); Wind Energy (Loughborough University: UK); Waste Energy; Carbon Financial Markets (AFMA); Shareholders/Partnership Agreements, Conveyancing, Leasing and Wills/Estate administration.
Dermot is a published athor in leading international/national journals on renewables & carbon and is the inaugural author of Lexis Nexis' Energy Law & Regulation.
